FUN FACTS FRIDAYS: RIDDLES

August 25, 2023

Solving brain teasers can help to boost brain power, keep our memories strong, and entertain us. This post offers a baker’s dozen riddles for today’s mental exercise.

  1. A man stands on one side of a river, his dog on the other. The man calls his dog, who immediately crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or a boat. How did the dog do it?
  2. I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?
  3. Johnny’s mother had three children. The first child was named April. The second child was named May. What was the third child’s name?
  4. How much dirt is there in a hole that measures two feet by three feet by four feet?
  5. What word in the English language is always spelled incorrectly?
  6. If you were running a race and you passed the person in 2nd place, what place would you be in now?
  7. What goes up but never comes down?
  8. Spelled forwards I’m what you do every day, spelled backward I’m something you hate. What am I?
  9. How many months of the year have 28 days?
  10. What word is pronounced the same if you take away four of its five letters?
  11. What is so delicate that saying its name breaks it?
  12. Two boxers are in a match scheduled for 12 rounds. (Pure boxing only – no kicking, UFC takedowns, or anything else). One of the boxers gets knocked out after only six rounds, yet no man throws a punch. How is this possible?
  13. What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years?

As this post is not an IQ test, don’t worry how many you solve: “the value lies in stretching your brain beyond its normal ways of thinking.” Have fun! •

Pam, I did have fun with the riddles.

Just one thing – There is not one of your beautiful photos. Perhaps Vancouver has some street art that approximates The Thinker ?

I always look forward to your usual artwork.

Glen wished we could have done the riddles together like you and Rick. More fun that way. And two brains are better than one. But I’d already scored 7; he got 6. Tim solved 8.

I am sure that no one got fewer correct answers than I did.
I also muffed today’s Wordle puzzle.
There is no way to go but up.

9 for me….but if I am being honest….4 of the riddles were already familiar to me. One of the Peleton instructors likes to throw in a couple of riddles from time to time. Did not find that very helpful until today (haha)
